Why Does My Carpet Smell? Common Causes and Real Fixes

Carpet is the biggest filter in the house: it traps whatever lands on it, and over time it can hold onto smells from pets, food, moisture and even its own installation. A carpet that smells is telling you something specific, and the fix depends on which cause you are dealing with. Masking it with air freshener never works for long, because the source is still in the fibres or the padding underneath.

This guide walks through the common causes and the right response to each, using guidance from the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI). Your carpet manufacturer's care instructions always come first.

The usual suspects

  • Pet accidents. Urine soaks through to the padding, and the smell returns in humid weather even after the surface looks clean. See our pet urine and odour guide for the full routine.
  • Spills that reached the padding. Milk, juice and food spills that were only surface-cleaned leave residue underneath, which sours over time.
  • Moisture and humidity. Basements and ground-floor rooms in Toronto and Durham homes take on a musty smell when carpets stay damp - common after wet winters, small leaks or a DIY clean that dried too slowly.
  • New carpet smell. A slight odour after installation can come from the new carpet, cushion, adhesives or seaming tape - or from removing the old carpet. The CRI says most new-carpet off-gassing is complete within about 24 hours and recommends ventilating with fresh air for 48 to 72 hours; it should not linger for years.
  • Absorbed household odours. Cooking and smoke soak into fibres gradually, so the room can smell stale without any single spill to blame.

Why the smell comes back after cleaning

If a smell returns a few days after a clean, the source was below the surface. Spot cleaning treats the fibres you can see; liquid that reached the padding wicks back up as the carpet dries. The other common cause is slow drying. The CRI's FAQ is direct on this point: wet-cleaned carpet should be dry within 12 hours, and properly extraction-cleaned carpet should not stay wet long enough to grow mould. Rental and grocery-store machines often leave far more water behind than professional equipment, which is why a DIY clean can leave a room smelling worse before it smells better. Our drying time guide covers what normal looks like.

What you can do yourself

  • Find the source first. Smell close to the carpet in different spots; a localized patch points to a spill or accident, a whole-room mustiness points to moisture.
  • Ventilate. For new carpet or after any wet cleaning, open windows and run fans or the HVAC fan - the CRI recommends 48 to 72 hours of good air exchange for new installations.
  • Vacuum regularly. The CRI recommends at least twice a week, especially in high-traffic areas, so odour-holding soil does not accumulate.
  • Treat spills properly the first time: blot, never scrub, and dry the area thoroughly afterwards.
  • Fix the moisture, not just the carpet: a musty basement carpet will keep smelling until the humidity or leak behind it is dealt with.

When to call a professional

Some odours do not respond to home treatment: anything that has reached the padding, smells that return after cleaning, whole-room staleness from years of absorbed odours, and any carpet that got properly wet from a leak or over-wet clean. Hot water extraction flushes the source out of the pile rather than masking it - the CRI suggests it even for a new-carpet smell that ventilation and vacuuming do not resolve. If the carpet was saturated by a leak or flood and stayed damp, mention that when you call: padding and subfloor may need attention too.
