For many homes, professional carpet cleaning every 12 to 18 months is a useful starting point. It is not a rule for every carpet. Your carpet manufacturer's care instructions come first, and busy rooms or homes with pets may need attention sooner.
If you live in Toronto, Scarborough, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby or Oshawa, the best schedule is the one that matches how your home is used. A quiet bedroom and the route from the front door to the living room do not collect the same amount of soil.
The Carpet and Rug Institute's homeowner guide recommends professional deep cleaning every 12 to 18 months. It also stresses regular vacuuming and prompt spill cleanup.
That range is a planning guide, not a substitute for your carpet's warranty. Check the care booklet or manufacturer's website for the cleaning method, frequency and any equipment or documentation requirements. Keep your cleaning receipt if your warranty asks for proof of maintenance.
Different manufacturers frame the timing differently. For example, Shaw Floors' care guide recommends professional hot water extraction every 6 to 18 months, depending on traffic. That does not mean every household needs a six-month appointment. It means the amount of use matters.
Use the following as a decision guide rather than a fixed prescription:
You do not have to treat every room as equally dirty. Tell the cleaner which areas are used most, when the carpet was last cleaned and whether there are stains or odours. That information is more useful than simply saying the whole home is overdue.
A calendar reminder is helpful, but the carpet's condition matters too. Ask for an assessment when you notice:
Cleaning is not a promise to reverse every mark. Worn fibres, colour loss and some stains may remain. If a stain returns or an odour persists, explain what happened and which products you have already used so the cleaner can assess the problem.
Vacuum regularly. The Carpet and Rug Institute suggests at least weekly vacuuming, with more frequent cleaning where traffic is heavier. Follow your carpet's instructions for vacuum settings, especially on delicate or long-pile carpet.
Blot spills promptly. Shaw advises using a clean, white absorbent cloth and avoiding abrasive rubbing or scrubbing. Choose a cleaner approved for your carpet, follow its label and test it in a hidden area first. Avoid experimenting with a mixture of household cleaners.
Use entrance mats. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends mats to help trap soil at doors. Clean the mats too, and make a habit of keeping outdoor footwear away from carpeted rooms.
Do not use routine cleaning to hide an unresolved problem. A pet accident, leak or persistently damp area deserves its own assessment. Tell the cleaner before booking rather than assuming a standard package will handle it.
Before requesting a quote, note the rooms and extra areas, the carpet material if known, the last cleaning date and any pet issues. Ask which furniture needs moving and what drying arrangements your home needs. Do not assume all furniture moving or every stain treatment is included.
Revive Carpet Cleaning serves Toronto, Scarborough, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa. Our current room packages are $99 for one room, $139 for two, $169 for three and $199 for four. Extra rooms or areas are +$30. Heavy soiling or pet damage can change the quote, so the price is confirmed before work starts.

This guide uses the Carpet and Rug Institute's homeowner cleaning guidance and Shaw Floors' care instructions, linked above. It is general household advice, not a claim that Revive holds either organisation's certification. Your own carpet's care instructions and warranty take priority.
